Our Story

Lilian's Journey —
From Struggle to Purpose

"
No child should starve. No woman should beg to feed her family.

Women Gro Initiative Uganda was founded by Lilian Nakigozi, who grew up in Katanga slum — one of Uganda's most deprived communities. As a child, Lilian faced the harsh realities of hunger and poverty. Her family often went days without food and she lost her three-year-old sister to starvation when she was just eight years old.

Despite these hardships, her determination never faded. She taught herself sustainable urban farming — vertical gardening — which became her path out of poverty. Seeing its potential to feed families and create jobs, she founded WomenGro to empower other women facing the same struggles she once did.
